This weekend was a delightful adventure the likes of which I haven’t had in a while. I often forget how much there is to do around Madison and the Wisconsin Dells, and after this weekend, I’m not sure I ever had a full understanding of it in the first place. Somehow, we explored a few new places yet left with even more unexplored landmarks we want to return to.
I have an unusual report today- a neat thrift store find that has enriched many late evenings over the course of my last few weeks- Montague Island Mysteries. It practically jumped off the shelf at me at St. Vincent De Paul, and it’s been a remarkably pleasant blind purchase.
Today’s memento is an item from one of the more novel approaches to escape rooms in the area. City 13 is one of the biggest and most elaborate escape room venues in the midwest, if not the United States. They’re best known for their 4+ hour Save the City game, but Kandy Corps is quite novel as well.
I’m going to make a bold claim- You’ve Been Played, by Adrian Hon, is the best nonfiction book I’ve read in years. The last book I got this much value from was Thinking Fast and Slow, the seminal work of Nobel laureate Daniel Kahneman. I don’t make that comparison lightly.
I was excited about the opportunity to go to Transworld. Primarily known as a haunted house convention, Transworld also branches out into other interactive entertainment, most notably escape rooms.
Looking through my odds and ends, I stumbled across a pretty interesting glimpse of a future that wasn’t to be – a flyer for the “Escape Room Passport” app. I picked up the flyer at EscapeRoomPassport’s booth at the escape room convention in August 2016.
Not gonna lie- my current trip to Fort Lauderdale started out rough. I’ve had a lot of fun, but there have also been quite a few challenges along the way!
There are at least two noteworthy Mindtrap escape room businesses in the US – one in Illinois and the other in California. I’ve heard lots of good things about the California one, and I really enjoyed other rooms designed by the same people (Labyrinth Games in Nampa, ID), but today’s memento is from the Illinois one.
Today’s memento brings me back more than five years. I last played a game at Edge of Escape in late 2018, beta testing the “Tunnels of London” game.
