It’s my first time in a few years actually attending an escape room conference! I was around during Transworld last year but this is the first time I’m going to the event itself!
My trip hasn’t gone fully according to plan thus far. My initial thought was to start the day with back to back escape rooms from nine to noon near where we’re staying in St. Charles, MO. Then I would return to the hotel to bring Christina some lunch before heading to Transworld and spending the afternoon there, leading into the escape room mixer in the evening. After that I’d call it a night, since this is our dog’s first stay in a hotel and we’re not sure about leaving him alone yet.
Unfortunately, the only escape room in this area that has time slots in the morning hasn’t been picking up their phone and the slots can’t be booked online, so I’ve had to change my plans. My new plan is to stick around the hotel until I can bring Christina an early lunch, then head straight to Transworld. I’m open to leaving Transworld to do an escape room as long as I can get back in time for the escape room mixer at 5:30, but I also want to be careful not to be the guy hanging around the convention trying to get a team of people to leave the convention. If I hear of concrete plans to go do a room, I’m happy to join, but it’d be bad form for me to try to recruit convention attendees to do something other than the convention today!
So what am I looking to accomplish today? With only one day at the convention before I head further south tomorrow, I really just want to meet people. The last time I attended a convention, I met some very cool people and also jotted down some names of businesses I wanted to visit on my travels. I’ve also wanted to develop my network of fellow enthusiasts so that maybe, just maybe, someday I’ll be able to put together an event for versus rooms- something that’s been on my wish list for a long time.
I’m also interested in getting a feel for if it makes sense for my dad and I to get a booth next year for our budding business. I don’t necessarily want this volume of attention yet, but I do believe that my custom papercraft artwork is one of the coolest possible souvenirs an escape room might offer.
So there’s a lot to see and a lot to do, and time is wasting! Time for me to go bring lunch for Christina and check things out! Will also see if I can record video of the convention to share- I’m not sure if that’s against the rules, though!
