Memento #9: 20th Century Puzzle Books

As part of a new year’s resolution, I challenged myself and others to spread the love of puzzles with a new generation, and this week, I found a reminder of why this challenge resonates with me so much. These logic problem magazines were a godsend on long car rides in my childhood, and I always love teasing out the solutions from elaborate puzzles like these.

I did some research online about the publishers and made a very happy discovery- both of these publications are going strong twenty five years later. Penny Dell Puzzles, the publisher behind both of these books, is celebrating 50 years of circulating puzzles.

The books are branded separately as Dell and PennyPress, but these two publishers combined to become Penny Dell in 1996, even prior to these turn-of-the-century books I have here. Penny Dell continues to be a leading producer of puzzle content with over 85 different publications currently in circulation.

Even though the site indicates a 50 year anniversary, the About Us section indicates that Dell Puzzle Magazines started in 1931, nearly 100 years ago! I love to see this type of longevity with a puzzle producer- it gives me hope that my favorite escape room themes will stick around and inspire generations that aren’t even born yet.

As for these books, they’re not going back into storage. Logic puzzles are timeless, and I will enjoy solving them as I finish the job I started sitting in the back seat on a long car ride in the 90s!
