When booking a flight recently, I saw a tremendously intriguing option. Frontier Airlines offers a “GoWild” pass promising unlimited flights for the next 1.25 years for only $349/year!
As someone who uses Frontier quite a bit, I was quite intrigued by this. Chicago isn’t a Frontier hub, but it has plenty of good routes to places I wouldn’t mind going somewhat frequently (Denver, Las Vegas, Florida, among others).
Reviewing the details of the GoWild program, I found a few critical limitations:
- The flights aren’t totally free – it’s only the base fare that goes to zero, but there are about $15 of fees per flight. Still not a bad deal, but this adds up.
- Bags aren’t included, and bags are expensive.
- Domestic flights aren’t locked in until the day prior to the flight.
I travel lightly and I can live with the first and second bullet, but that third is a doozy. If I take a “free” flight to Las Vegas but the flights home are busy, it might take me a few days to find a seat.
That last limitation tells me this program isn’t for me. However, for anyone with the flexibility, it’s an amazing way to travel to many great destinations. Frontier flies to 25 locations from Chicago, not shabby. For those who live near Denver, there are over 70 destinations! It’d be very easy to justify the cost in the right circumstances. As for me, I’ll continue to have to search flights one by one!
