From the Ashes

I stumbled across a double-faceted delight recently. I’m always excited to see new escape rooms open, and to my surprise and delight, a new business called “City Limits Escape” in Volo, IL showed up on the map. After combing through social media a bit, it seems that there’s a twist to this surprise- City Limits is bringing back the games from City 13 Escape!

For those who don’t know, City 13 was an award winning escape room just south of Milwaukee. While most known for its ambitious four hour saga room, City 13 had a few other wrinkles and twists that set it apart. It was one of the first escape room experiences to weave all its games together across a single narrative track and even incorporate the space between the rooms as part of the experience. Think of it like Batman- you could have a location for City Hall, the Batcave, Arkham Asylum, etc, all tied together within a Gotham space.

2025 was a tough year, and we lost a lot of the highest rated escape rooms in the Midwest. It’s great to see that arrow turn around and bring back some of the magic we lost last year.

Not a lot has been revealed about the new location. It sounds like the games will be recreated, but they’ll be different enough for returning players to have enough new to discover. No word on whether the four hour experience will come back. I hope it does.

This announcement is positive in its own right, and it makes me hopeful that some of the other phenomenal escape rooms that have closed may have a future again in some form. I hope City 13 does well in its new location and starts a trend!
